Overview

The goal of CCC Health & Wellness is to support the 116 California community colleges in identifying, implementing, and sustaining strategies for addressing student health, mental health, wellness, and basic needs. CARS role is designed to be responsive to the needs of Chancellor’s Office project staff in supporting college leadership, faculty, staff, and students share best practices, collaborate, and develop innovative services and policies.

The CARS team continues to support statewide associations such as 1) the CCC Mental Health Wellness Association (MHWA) Conferences with connecting presenters for identified topics, agenda planning and offering continuing education credit to participants and 2) the Health Services Association California Community Colleges (HSACCC) where CARS assists with conference planning and development of visual materials.

CARS has created and maintained the ongoing website that serves as a hub for community college staff and students. It offers a variety of resources, both internal and curated from existing evidence-based and peer-reviewed sources.

  • Data & Research Studies: Student mental health outcomes, basic needs correlations.
  • Assessment Tools & Frameworks: Campus needs assessments, mental health screening tools for students.
  • Policy and Procedure Templates: Model policies for supporting students.
  • Training & Webinars: For faculty, staff, and students (e.g., resilience-building, elevating current best practices).
  • Peer Support & Student-Led Initiatives: Peer ambassador programs, internship programs.
  • Multimedia Education: Videos and infographics on stigma, suicide student demographics.
  • Crisis Intervention Information: 24/7 helplines, crisis chat links, text lines.
  • Evaluation and reporting: Environmental scanning; landscape analyses assessing mental health support services from a students’ perspectives; detailed data matrix to analyze homelessness and housing insecurity as part of the Homelessness and Housing Insecurity Pilot.
  • Funding Layering, Blending, and Braiding.
  • Conference and Event Planning.

The CCC Health & Wellness project serves the California Community Colleges system, supporting a wide range of campus stakeholders with a shared goal of improving student mental health and addressing basic needs. It equips the entire California Community Colleges community with evidence-informed resources to support student well-being, academic success, and social connection—with a strong emphasis on relevance, accessibility, and coordinated care. Its primary audience includes:

  • Students, especially those experiencing mental health challenges, food insecurity, housing instability, or financial hardship. This includes high-priority populations such as  foster youth, student parents, and veterans.
  • Faculty, classified professionals, and administrators seeking training, tools, and strategies to identify student needs, reduce stigma, and create supportive campus environments.
  • Campus mental health and wellness staff, including Basic Needs Center coordinators, counselors, and program leads, who rely on the site for toolkits, data, policy templates, and best practices to guide program development.
  • System-level decision-makers, such as student services administrators and Chancellor’s Office staff, who use the site to support policy implementation, monitor progress on legislative goals, and align services across colleges.
